Phoenix, Arizona: In a major development, Sencere Hayes, a Tennessee man already in custody for unrelated charges, has been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of Mercedes Vega, a young woman whose charred remains were discovered inside a burning vehicle.

The case, which has remained unresolved for over a year-and-a-half, has left Vega's family navigating an emotional rollercoaster of grief and frustration.

Mercedes Vega was murdered and tortured before her body was set ablaze in a vehicle. The horrific crime, which took place on Mill Avenue in Tempe, sparked an intensive investigation by law enforcement. Despite their efforts, for over 18 months, the case remained a mystery, with no clear suspects or answers.

The turning point came last week when Hayes was charged with first-degree murder while already detained in Tennessee on separate charges, including theft, firearm possession, reckless driving, and DUI. Notably, all these charges stemmed from incidents occurring after Vega's death, raising questions about Hayes's alleged involvement in crimes spanning multiple states.

Court records reveal Hayes’s criminal history includes two arrests in Tennessee within the last year. In May, he was charged with theft and illegal firearm possession. Just a month later, he faced accusations of driving under the influence, reckless driving, and other offenses. These arrests occurred after Vega's murder, which investigators now believe Hayes may be linked to despite the geographic distance and lack of a known relationship between him and the victim.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO), there is no evidence to suggest Vega and Hayes knew each other. Hayes is currently facing extradition to Arizona, where prosecutors plan to pursue first-degree murder charges.

Three years prior to her murder Vega was the victim of an armed robbery.

"It's not going to bring her back. We know that," said a family member. "But we are so looking forward to her receiving what she deserves."

Three years prior to her murder Vega was the victim of an armed robbery. She identified her assailant, leading to his conviction. That man, identified as a Chattanooga resident like Hayes, has raised additional questions about potential connections between the two incidents, though no link has been confirmed.

Investigators are working closely with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office to extradite Hayes to Arizona. Vega's family acknowledges that closure may remain elusive. "Will we ever find out 100% what happened? Maybe we will, maybe we won't," said one relative.
