Phoenix, Arizona: The Roosevelt School District in South Phoenix is grappling with a nearly $5 million structural deficit, prompting discussions about potentially closing and consolidating five schools.

During a packed meeting on Tuesday night, emotions ran high as Superintendent Dr. Dani Portillo presented her proposal to address the financial shortfall. Portillo explained that the deficit stems from declining student enrollment and competition from over 30 charter and private schools operating in the area.

"We simply do not have enough money to meet yearly operational costs," Portillo stated.

Her proposed solution involves merging five schools to streamline expenses. However, the suggestion has sparked a mix of reactions among board members and parents.

One board member voiced opposition to the closures, suggesting alternative cost-cutting measures instead. "This district is in crisis," he said, "but we must explore every option before closing schools."

The community remains equally divided. Some parents advocated for the proposed mergers, emphasizing the importance of unity over preserving individual school buildings.

"If we are supposed to be one South Phoenix, what’s the problem with Julian and King becoming one?" one parent asked. "Buildings and names are not what matter most."

Others raised concerns about logistical challenges, such as transportation and the broader impact on their children’s education.

Another attendee highlighted the need for systemic change, urging the community to push for legislative solutions. "This isn’t just about money—it’s about our people, our neighborhood," they said. "If we don’t fight for more funding, this won’t be the only cut we face."

Tuesday’s meeting was the first of two scheduled parent forums. The next meeting will be held in two weeks, offering another opportunity for community input. The Roosevelt School District Board is expected to make a final decision on December 5.
