2024 Paris Olympics: Here are all the Sun Devils we can't wait to cheer on at the Summer Games
Phoenix, Arizona: ASU's Sun Devils are going to be very well represented at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. Here's the whole list of athletes Arizonans will be cheering for.
Men’s Swimming
Tiago Behar, Switzerland
Tiago Behar is a Swiss swimmer in the 4x200 meter freestyle relay. The ASU senior has showcased impressive speed and endurance in the pool. Behar is a key member of the ASU swimming team.
Leon Marchand, France
Leon Marchand, a French swimmer, excelled in the 200m individual medley, 400m individual medley, 200m butterfly, and 200m breaststroke while competing for ASU from 2021 to 2024. He won the gold medal in the 400 metre individual medley and the 200 metre individual medley and the silver medal in the 200 metre butterfly at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships. At the 2023 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, he won NCAA titles in the 200 yard breaststroke, 200 yard individual medley, and 400 yard individual medley.
Ilya Kharun, Canada
Ilya Kharun is a Canadian swimmer specializing in the 100m and 200m butterfly events. As a sophomore at ASU, Kharun has quickly made a name for himself. Kharun made his international debut for Canada at the 2022 World Short Course championships. Kharun won two medals at the event, set two World Junior records and three Canadian records.
Tolu Young, Fiji
Tolu Young, hailing from Fiji, competes in the 50m freestyle and is an incoming freshman at ASU. His arrival is highly anticipated.
Max McCusker, Ireland
Max McCusker, an Irish swimmer, was a key member of the ASU swimming team from 2022 to 2023, specializing in the 4x100m medley relay.
Women’s Golf
Carlota Ciganda, Spain
Carlota Ciganda, from Spain, played at ASU from 2007 to 2011. She has since established herself as a prominent figure in professional golf. Ciganda was the ladies' winner of the 2019 AON Risk Reward Challenge, collecting the $1,000,000 prize.
Alessandra Fanali, Italy
Alessandra Fanali, an Italian golfer, competed for ASU from 2018 to 2022. In 2024, Fanali was runner-up in the season opener Magical Kenya Ladies Open behind Shannon Tan, having started the day as joint leaders.
Alexandra Forsterling, Germany
Alexandra Forsterling, from Germany, played at ASU from 2018 to 2021. In 2024, Försterling won the Aramco Team Series event in Florida and became the first German to win an LET event on home soil when she won the Amundi German Masters in a playoff with Emma Spitz.
Linn Grant, Sweden
Linn Grant, a Swedish golfer, competed for ASU from 2019 to 2021. In June 2024, Grant won on the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed for a second time, after starting the final day 11 shots behind 54-hole leader Sebastian Söderberg, achieving the biggest comeback ever in a golf tournament.
Azahara Munoz, Spain
Azahara Munoz, from Spain, played at ASU from 2006 to 2009. At ASU, she was the 2008 NCAA Individual Champion in her junior year. She graduated magna cum laude from ASU in May 2009 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in business.
Men’s Golf
David Puig, Spain
David Puig, a Spanish golfer, played at ASU from 2020 to 2022. In 2022, Puig's Sun Devils team advanced to the final match at the NCAA Championship. He was invited to the inaugural tournament of the LIV Golf Invitational Series at Centurion Club, along with fellow amateur Ratchanon Chantananuwat.
Jon Rahm, Spain
Jon Rahm, hailing from Spain, played at ASU from 2012 to 2016. In June 2021, Rahm became the first Spanish golfer to win the U.S. Open. In 2023, he won the Masters Tournament, his second major championship.
Kevin Yu, Chinese Taipei
Kevin Yu, from Chinese Taipei, played at ASU from 2016 to 2020. With AZU Yu won three individual collegiate titles and finishing third, behind Matthew Wolff, in the individual competition at the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship.
Women’s Soccer
Gabi Rennie, New Zealand
Gabi Rennie, from New Zealand, played at ASU from 2022 to 2023. She was part of the New Zealand team in the football competition at the 2020 Summer Olympics. In February 2024, Rennie joined Finnish club Åland United.
Women’s Water Polo
Blaire McDowell, Canada
Blaire McDowell, a Canadian water polo player, competed for ASU from 2019 to 2022. McDowell's defensive skills and strategic gameplay were key assets to the team.
Bente Rogge, Netherlands
Bente Rogge, from the Netherlands, played at ASU from 2017 to 2021. Known for her powerful presence in the water and strategic mind, Rogge was a cornerstone of the ASU water polo team.
Lieke Rogge, Netherlands
Lieke Rogge, also from the Netherlands, competed at ASU in 2019. Although her time at ASU was brief, she made significant contributions to the team.
Mia Rycraw, France
Mia Rycraw, a French water polo player, competed for ASU from 2014 to 2018. Rycraw's exceptional goalkeeping skills and leadership were critical to the team's successes.
Women’s Tennis
Desirae Krawczyk, United States
Desirae Krawczyk, a tennis player, competed for ASU from 2013 to 2016. Krawczyk has a career-high doubles ranking of world No. 8, achieved on 14 August 2023, and has won ten titles on the WTA Tour, including five at the WTA 500-level.
Men’s Basketball
Lu Dort, Canada
Lu Dort, a Canadian basketball player, competed for ASU in 2019. His performances caught the attention of professional scouts, leading to a successful career in the NBA with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Women’s Basketball
Promise Amukamara, Nigeria
Promise Amukamara, from Nigeria, played at ASU from 2012 to 2015. Promise was a member of D’Tigress, Nigeria’s female basketball team. She was the point-guard of the team that played at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. She also participated at the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.
Track and Field
Beatrice Nedberge Llano, Norway
Beatrice Nedberge Llano, a Norwegian athlete specializing in the hammer throw, competed for ASU from 2019 to 2022. She became Norwegian champion in 2015, 2016 and 2017, representing Laksevåg TIL. Her personal best in the event is 71.43 metres set in Tempe in 2019. This is the current national record.
Jorinde van Klinken, Netherlands
Jorinde van Klinken, from the Netherlands, competed for ASU from 2021 to 2023, specializing in the shot put and discus. She represented her country in the discus at the 2019 World Championships in Doha. In the same year, she won a gold medal in the shot put at the 2019 European U20 Championships.
