What is National CleanUp Day?
National CleanUp Day is an annual event organized by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) as part of the broader National CleanUp Day initiative. Scheduled for September 21, this event aims to reduce litter along Arizona’s state highways. Volunteers, including those from the Adopt a Highway program, participate in cleaning up designated highway segments. ADOT provides one-day permits for volunteers and encourages groups to extend their permits for ongoing participation.
How do you get a permit?
Volunteer groups with an active permit register to notify ADOT of the intent to clean their adopted segment(s) on Septmber 21, National CleanUp Day. Those interested in a one-day permit register by Friday, September 6 to receive assistance applying for a permit. One-day permit holders may have the option to extend the permit for two years after the September 21 event. Please note that an extended permit may be located in a different area than the original one-day permit granted.
When a group commits to a two-year permit and officially reports the first clean up to ADOT, recognition signs in the group’s name are ordered and installed at each end of the adopted mile. ADOT will try and help groups find an adoptable segment to clean several times a year during the two-year permit period.
How long is a segment?
Highway segments are usually one mile in each direction and largely in rural areas that are deemed safe for volunteers.
