Apache Junction downtown revitalization makes big push to get everyone on board
Apache Junction, Arizona: Apache Junction has begun its project to rejuvenate its downtown district in collaboration with Swaback Architects and Planners. The initiative aims to update the Downtown Redevelopment and Implementation Strategy (DRIS) completed in 2010, addressing current community needs and envisioning new opportunities for development.
More than 100 community members attended the second public open house on July 10, to share feedback on the downtown revitalization master plan. Attendees had the opportunity to review the summary of findings from the prior open house and add additional comments, as well as visit various concept boards containing photos for potential downtown elements such as streetscapes, lighting and art installations, multi-purpose trails, outdoor event space, et al.
Apache Junction recently announced the purchase of 10 acres of downtown property, a significant step towards achieving this vision. This land acquisition is expected to play a crucial role in the area’s development.
The Downtown Revitalization planning process comprises three key components:
Data Gathering and Market Assessment: Currently under way, this phase involves Swaback representatives analyzing documents, plans, and market trends to assess the current state of downtown Apache Junction.
Preliminary Designs and Community Input: In the next phase, preliminary designs and information will be shared with the public and stakeholders to gather ideas and recommendations.
Final Plan Document: The final phase involves integrating all ideas into a cohesive plan, which will be presented as a final document by September 2024. This comprehensive plan will outline the future vision for downtown Apache Junction.
The master plan will incorporate several elements developed in partnership with the community, city leadership, and the consultant team.
Key components include
Identifying types of businesses and development projects suitable for the downtown district.
Planning future roadways and trails to enhance connectivity.
Highlighting areas for potential art installations and placemaking initiatives.
Recommending necessary infrastructure upgrades.
Suggesting specific actions to create a distinct sense of place.
Mayor Chip Wilson expressed enthusiasm about the project, saying, "This is an exciting time for Apache Junction. We are committed to creating a downtown that reflects our community’s identity and aspirations."
