Apache Junction has increased water rates, here's how much more you will be paying
Apache Junction, Arizona (Release): Starting July 1, 2024, Apache Junction water rates will increase by about $1.66 per month for the average customer. According to the Apache Junction Water District (AJWD) the slight increase helps fund essential infrastructure improvements, including a new water well, online payment portal, and advanced purification system.
The Water Rates consist of:
Base Service Charge, which is based on water meter size, and
Consumption Charge, which is based on the amount of water used
AJWD uses a tiered water rate structure so the price for water increases as the volume used increases. This provides a financial incentive for customers to use water more efficiently because high volume consumption is charged at a higher rate.
The AJWD, which only serves a portion of the city, provides water to approximately 24 square miles. The water supply comes from multiple sources, including the Central Arizona Project, groundwater, and water acquired from the Gila River Indian Community.
What is the Designation of Assured Water Supply?
The 'Designation of Assured Water Supply' (DAWS) is a certification issued by the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) to ensure new developments have a long-term, reliable water supply. This designation is crucial for any new subdivisions or housing developments within Arizona's Active Management Areas (AMAs), which are regions where groundwater depletion is a significant concern.
To obtain a DAWS, a developer must demonstrate that there is a sufficient water supply for 100 years. This involves proving that the water source is physically, legally, and continuously available and that it meets water quality standards. The purpose of this program is to prevent overdevelopment in areas where water resources are insufficient to support long-term growth, thus promoting sustainable water use and management
