Can Mark Kelly replace Joe Biden? Senator's cred in focus after speculation he's on on 'shortlist'

Phoenix, Arizona: While Kamala Harris may seem like a shoo-in as the Democratic presidential candiate in 2024, it's not that cut-and-dry...yet. In fact it has not stopped all number of those ubiquitous 'short-lists'  from popping up, and many of them seem to have one name in common, Arizona senator Mark Kelly.

But to those of you not from this neck of the woods, here's a primer on the astronaut who could, possibly, have an exceedingly slim outside shot of tackling Trump in November.

Where and when was Mark Kelly born?

Kelly was born on February 21, 1964, in Orange, New Jersey. His father was a police officer, and his mother became one of the first female police officers in West Orange. Inspired by his parents, Kelly pursued a military career, graduating from the US Merchant Marine Academy in 1986 with a degree in Marine Engineering and Nautical Science. He later earned a master's degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the US Naval Postgraduate School.

Did Mark Kelly see active service?

Kelly flew 39 combat missions during the Gulf War. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. His experience as a test pilot would stand him in good stead for his next adventure.

How many times has Mark Kelly been to space?

Before we get into that it's important to state the Mark is not the first Kelly in space. His twin brother Scott is also an astronaut and has been to space four times, as has Mark. Mark flew for space missions, twice as commander of the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

Who is Mark Kelly's wife?

Mark Kelly is married to former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. They went through a traumatic time when Giffords was shot in the head in an assassination attempt in 2011 that left six people dead. Giffords survived, but resigned from Congress the following year to focus on her recovery.

In February 2019, Mark Kelly announced his candidacy for the US Senate, seeking to complete the term of the late Senator John McCain. Kelly successfully beat Republican Senator Martha McSally in the November 2020 special election, becoming Arizona's junior senator.
