DARK MATTER: Apache Junction has begun changing your view of the night sky

Apache Junction, Arizona: Phase one of the AJ’s Urban Night Sky Place (UNSP) Project is underway at City Hall and the Police Department. The city is replacing all outdoor light fixtures to be fully shielded with a color temperature of 3,000K or less. The aim of the project is to reduce light pollution, preserve natural habitats, and allow for better views of the night sky. The city aims to become Dark Sky certified in the future.

What is the Dark Sky Organization?
The Dark Sky Organization, formally known as the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the night skies for present and future generations. Founded in 1988, the IDA aims to reduce light pollution and promote responsible outdoor lighting to preserve the natural night environment.
What is the Urban Night Sky Place (UNSP) Project?
The Urban Night Sky Place (UNSP) Project is an initiative by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) aimed at recognizing and promoting urban areas that make significant efforts to mitigate light pollution and preserve the night sky. The UNSP designation is part of IDA's Dark Sky Places Program, which also includes Dark Sky Communities, Parks, Reserves, and Sanctuaries.

Some designated Urban Night Sky Places include Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, California, and Parque del Retiro in Madrid, Spain. These sites have implemented measures to control light pollution and promote dark sky awareness.
