Washington D.C.: President Donald Trump has firmly dismissed speculation about seeking an unconstitutional third term in 2028, despite pressure from some supporters to extend his tenure beyond the legal limit.

In a Meet the Press interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, Trump acknowledged the unprecedented enthusiasm among his base but conceded, "To the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do it." While he joked about supporters selling "2028" merchandise, he clarified, "This is not something I’m looking to do."

Instead, Trump signaled a focus on grooming successors to continue his "Make America Great Again" agenda, naming Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential heirs. Polls suggest Republicans also favor Donald Trump Jr., though he has shown little interest in running. "I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody... a great Republican to carry it forward," Trump said.

The interview took a contentious turn when Welker pressed Trump on whether illegal immigrants deserve due process before deportation. "I’m not a lawyer," Trump replied, dismissing her citation of the Fifth Amendment. "We’d have to have a million or two million trials," he argued, insisting his mandate was to remove "murderers and drug dealers" despite legal hurdles.

Welker expressed alarm that Trump had ever entertained defying constitutional term limits. "Some of your allies are pretty serious about this," she noted, referencing discussions of a constitutional amendment to enable a third term. Trump brushed it off as a "compliment" but reaffirmed his refusal.
