Nuuk, Greenland: The leader of Inuit Ataqatigiit, Múte Egede, is calling for a strong and decisive Naalakkersuisut (Greenland’s government) to stand up for the nation’s sovereignty in the face of increasing pressure from the US administration.

“We have tried all diplomatic and democratic options, but Donald Trump and his administration remain undeterred in their mission to own and control Greenland. We must recognize the seriousness of the situation—every minute counts to prevent the American dream of annexation from becoming a reality. We need a government that can act decisively on behalf of the people,” Egede said.

Egede criticized democratic nations, particularly Greenland’s traditional allies, for their hesitant stance on the issue.

Múte Egede urged Greenland’s allies to voice their support more clearly.

“Until recently, we could trust the Americans as allies and partners. We have built strong cooperation based on mutual respect. But those days are over. The new U.S. leadership no longer cares about our shared history—it is solely focused on taking over our land without our consent,” he said.

He further urged Greenland’s allies to voice their support more clearly: “The Western allies once stood together, but that unity has been shattered under the current U.S. president. Our international partners seem to be whispering their support from the shadows, which is ineffective. If they do not openly oppose the U.S.'s treatment of Greenland, the situation will escalate, and American aggression will only grow.”

Egede pointed to the upcoming “private” visit by US Vice-President’s wife, Usha Vance, who is expected to be accompanied by Trump’s security advisor, Mike Waltz.

“This is not just a harmless visit. Why would a top security advisor be in Greenland? The only purpose is a show of power. Waltz is Trump’s closest confidant, and his presence here will only reinforce the US mission. The pressure will increase after this visit,” he warned.

Egede concluded with an urgent plea: “Now is the time for a decisive Naalakkersuisut. We need leadership that will defend Greenland’s sovereignty.”

Vance will visit Greenland on Thursday with a US delegation to tour historical sites, learn about the territory’s heritage and attend the national dogsled race, the White House said in a statement.

The delegation will return to the US on March 29. The White House the energy secretary, Chris Wright, will also travel to Greenland, visiting a US military base in Greenland, a US official said.
