THE BIRDS GOTTA PAY: Donald Trump's tariffs leave penguin community stunned after being hit by 10%

Canberra, Australia: US President Donald Trump's tariffs are so far-reaching that they've even included non-humans. The slate of reciprocal tariffs announced this Wednesday against dozens of countries also happened to include a few territories that are uninhabited. Cue much mirth.
The list of affected territories includes the Heard Island and McDonald Islands (HIMI), also Australian, located in the subantarctic region and with no permanent human presence.

The archipelago, declared a World Heritage Site, is home to a significant population of penguins and seals and is only open to scientific research. Despite its lack of economic activity, it will also be subject to a 10% tariff.
HIMI are some of the most isolated landmasses on Earth, with Heard Island -- the largest in the group -- covering about 368 square kilometers (142 square miles).

HIMI is home to a variety of seabirds, seals, and marine life. Species such as king penguins, macaroni penguins, and elephant seals that thrive in the cold, nutrient-rich waters surrounding the islands.
The islands have no permanent population and are protected as a nature reserve. They are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to their pristine environment and unique biodiversity. Access is strictly controlled, with visits mainly limited to scientific research expeditions.
