Phoenix, Arizona: A school in North Phoenix is implementing an initiative aimed at increasing student success by encouraging more fathers to participate in school activities.

The Norterra Canyon School, part of the Deer Valley Unified School District, has introduced the 'Watch D.O.G.S.' program, designed to bring more dads, grandfathers, uncles, and other male role models into the school environment.

The program, which stands for 'Dads of Great Students', focuses on boosting school safety, reducing bullying, and providing positive male role models for students. Wearing bright yellow shirts that stand out on campus, these volunteers help in various ways, from assisting in classrooms to monitoring the playground, creating a noticeable and encouraging presence throughout the school.

One participant, Anthony Esparza, told Arizona's Family how the program rotates volunteers every week, ensuring there are always extra eyes and ears on campus. This added supervision has significantly enhanced school safety and reduced instances of bullying.

"It's important for students to see a trusted, positive figure they can look up to," said Esparza. "When kids see a dad or father figure in a bright yellow shirt, it makes a difference. They're treated like local celebrities."

“When you walk on campus and see the sea of yellow shirts, you just get excited to see how they are helping kids,” principal Theresa Milks told Arizona's Family.

“I’ve been to the grocery store and another student is there and they tell me, ‘The WATCH D.O.G.S are around the corner. Have you seen them Mrs. Milks? The kids laugh with them, teachers laugh with them, just the vibe is very positive and exciting on campus when they are here,” she added.

The 'Watch D.O.G.S.' program is the first of its kind in the state. School officials report that the presence of these role models has had a noticeable impact on students, boosting their confidence and even improving test scores.
