Phoenix PD bids emotional farewell to Zane Coolidge, as motorcade marks Brother in Blue's passing
Phoenix, Arizona: The Phoenix Police Department and the community bid a sad farewell to Officer Zane Coolidge, who died after being shot in the line of duty earlier this week. Officer Coolidge, a five-year veteran of the force, passed away after being critically injured during an incident in downtown Phoenix. He leaves behind a wife and young daughter.
The tragic event unfolded on Tuesday when Coolidge and his partner, Officer Matthew Haney, were responding to reports of a suspect breaking into cars. Both officers were shot during the response, but while Haney's ballistic vest saved him, Coolidge sustained fatal injuries.
A procession took place Friday evening, with law enforcement from around the state honoring Coolidge as his body was escorted from Banner Hospital to the medical examiner’s office.
Phoenix Police Chief Michael Sullivan called Coolidge a "beloved member" of the department and praised the fallen officer’s bravery, saying, “Police officers are out there every day knowing the risks, but they do it because it’s a calling.”
This incident marks the eleventh time this year that Phoenix police officers have been met with gunfire while serving their community. Sullivan expressed his outrage at the senseless violence, stating that Coolidge’s passing has left the department and the community in deep grief.
Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego and Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs shared heartfelt tributes, with the mayor saying the entire community is mourning Coolidge's loss, and Governor Hobbs stating that his bravery, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.
The suspect, identified as Saul Bal, had a prior arrest in 2023 for drug possession, though the charges were dropped due to procedural issues. Bal has since been arrested and faces multiple charges in connection with the shooting.
A fundraiser is being organized to support Officer Coolidge's family. The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association also expressed its sorrow, calling Coolidge a hero and stating, "You will be missed, brother."
