Phoenix, Arizona: Renée Cheng is set to return to Arizona as she steps into her new role as dean of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and senior vice provost at Arizona State University (ASU) on November 1. Cheng began her academic journey in Arizona back in 1996 as an assistant professor of architecture at the University of Arizona.

Cheng replaces Steven Tepper, who led the Herberger Institute for a decade, during which time the institute launched The Sidney Poitier New American Film School, ASU FIDM, and expanded into several cities, including Los Angeles and Phoenix. She is eager to build on this legacy, viewing her new position as a tremendous opportunity to lead a vibrant, diverse community.

Before ASU, Cheng had a successful career at the University of Minnesota, where she served as a professor, associate dean, and head of the architecture school. She later became dean of the College of Built Environments at the University of Washington. A licensed architect, Cheng has worked for prestigious firms and founded her own design company. Her work has earned her numerous awards, including recognition as one of the top 25 most admired design educators in the US.

Cheng is an advocate for equity in architecture and has led key initiatives, such as the American Institute of Architects' guides for equitable practice. She sees design and the arts as crucial in addressing global challenges like climate change and housing. At ASU, she is excited to explore collaborations that can drive innovation and problem-solving. She believes that ASU’s bold approach to risk and commitment to excellence make it a unique institution capable of leading transformative change.
