Tempe gives local artists massive $187,000 boost
Tempe, Arizona: Tempe has awarded 27 arts grants to nonprofit organizations and artists collectives that present arts and culture programming in the city. The funding supports a wide variety of activities, from theatre groups to musical performances to inventive arts events in unexpected spaces.
A total of $187,000 was awarded to these groups in two grant categories. Wavemaker Art grants are distributed to nonprofit organizations, while Vibrant City grants are available to artist collectives, cultural groups and arts organizations.
Another $113,000 will be distributed through additional grant categories this fall, including another round of Vibrant City Arts grants and Arts in Schools grants.
"Supporting local artists where they are at is a priority for the city, and we're proud of this significant investment in the future of arts and culture in Tempe," said Tempe Mayor Corey Woods. "We invite all community members to get out and support the programming happening in venues throughout the city."
The competitive review process was conducted by four independent, objective and diverse community panels comprised of representatives from the Tempe Arts and Culture Commission, African American Advisory Committee, Career Ready Tempe and Tempe Tourism as well as Tempe residents, arts educators, students and practicing artists.
