Two shattered families hit by more bad news after tragedy takes a young life
Mesa, Arizona: The families of Zoey Johnson and Rehme Barnes already grieving over the death of one young women and has left another critically injured, have suffered more heartache after it was revealed that the man responsible for the crash that killed the two girls would not face felony charges.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, 45-year-old Nicholas Stewart Meyer was making a lane change on US 60 in Mesa around 8am on Sunday when he drifted to the right and crashed into a vehicle that was stopped on the side of the road. Two people who were near that vehicle were hit. Tragically, 23-year-old Zoey Johnson from Glendale was pronounced dead at the scene, while Barnes was taken to hospital.
The DPS said Meyer was arrested and booked into jail for driving with a revoked or suspended license and causing a death by a moving violation.
According to authorities, Barnes’s car ran out of gas on the freeway, leading her to pull over onto the shoulder. Zoey arrived to assist, and while the two were working on the disabled vehicle, an oncoming car reportedly swerved and struck them.
Family members, speaking to Arizona's Family, said, "He should have been in jail. This was preventable, and he should never have had the opportunity to do what he did.”
An investigation by the network found that Meyer has a lengthy history of driving violations, including repeated incidents of driving on a suspended license and numerous traffic offenses dating back to 2014.
Give Meyer's history, the charges could yet be upgraded to a felony. “We’re praying for justice,” a family spokesperson said.
