Washington D.C.: US President Donald Trump is optimstic that Russia and Ukraine could reach a peace agreement within days, suggesting both nations could then focus on trade with the US. His remarks follow hints from Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Washington may withdraw from mediation efforts is there is no progress made.

"HOPEFULLY RUSSIA [and] UKRAINE WILL MAKE A DEAL THIS WEEK," Trump posted on Truth Social. "BOTH WILL THEN START TO DO BIG BUSINESS WITH THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WHICH IS THRIVING, AND MAKE A FORTUNE!"

The statement came as a 30-hour Easter truce declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin expired Monday, with both sides accusing each other of violations.

Since taking office, Trump has pushed for a swift resolution to the war. His administration brokered a temporary halt to energy infrastructure strikes last month, but the deal collapsed amid mutual accusations of breaches.

According to the New York Post, U.S. officials aim to assess ceasefire prospects in the coming days. Rubio warned that Washington could abandon mediation if talks stall. "We need to figure out here, now, within a matter of days, whether this is doable," he said Friday. Trump backed his stance, stating there’s a "good chance of solving the problem."

Moscow insists any deal must address NATO expansion and Ukraine’s territorial disputes, demands Kiev has rejected. Russian UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia dismissed an immediate ceasefire as "unrealistic", accusing the West of using negotiations to rearm Ukraine.
