WEATHER UPDATE: Heatwave alert as sweltering temperatures threaten to scorch 4th of July cookouts

Phoenix, Arizona (Release): Temperatures yesterday were hotter, and the air was drier than days before and that will impact today’s (July 3) weather, with even higher temperatures and sunny skies to continue.
An upper-level trough is currently placed directly over the state, and its placement will set up very dry westerly flow from Southern California. This dry air advection will cause the moisture in the county to drop even further than it already has. As this trough moves to the east by tomorrow, we’ll see a northerly wind shift when strong high pressure expands into the region from the East Pacific.Consequently, even more moisture will be forced out of the state while extreme heat becomes the focus.

Today will be a scorcher and with no cloud cover development today, one can expect a high temperature range of 109-114°F. Winds will be light (5-10mph) up until this afternoon, with gusts up to 15-20mph, associated with some shortwave activity seen in lower levels of the atmosphere.
Tomorrow, the monsoon break continues and will raise temperatures across the county. Highs are expected to reach as high as 110-116°F, so taking special care when outside will be essential. Low temperatures will offer little relief from the heat, as they will settle in the low/mid 90s in urban areas and in the mid-80s outside of the cities. Winds throughout the day will be mild (8-12mph).
On Friday, we can expect the heat to continue, and it will be a brutal crawl up to as high as 114-118°F across the county. Lows will move down to the high 80s/low 90s.
