Hunter Biden whistleblower set for top spot at IRS amid shakeup before tax day

Washington D.C.: Gary Shapley, the IRS whistleblower who publicly testified about investigations into Hunter Biden’s taxes, is expected to be named acting IRS commissioner, according to the Associated Press.
Shapley, who alleged retaliation for cooperating with congressional probes into former President Joe Biden’s son, was recently promoted to Deputy Chief of IRS Criminal Investigations. Another investigator in the case, Joseph Ziegler, was assigned as a senior adviser for IRS reform at the Treasury Department.

The move comes as former Rep. Billy Long (R-MO), President Trump’s nominee for permanent IRS commissioner, awaits Senate confirmation. Shapley will replace acting Commissioner Melanie Krause, who is resigning following controversy over a deal to share taxpayer data with immigration authorities.
Shapley and Ziegler claim they were removed from the Hunter Biden case in 2022 after raising concerns about DOJ delays before the 2020 election. The investigation ended with Hunter Biden pleading guilty to tax and gun charges, only for President Biden to later pardon him—breaking a past pledge not to use clemency for family.
