Who is Nubia Gonzalez? Scottsdale mom turns herself in after going on the run over stolen $36k meant for kids
Scottsdale, Arizona: A Scottsdale mother identified as Nubia Gonzalez, who had been on the run for more than six weeks, has been arrested after turning herself in to Scottsdale Police. The woman, who had been a fugitive from the law, is now in custody, and authorities are investigating what led her to finally surrender.
Why was Nubia Gonzalez wanted?
Gonzalez, previously elected as the treasurer of the Cocoa Palm Teachers Parent Organization, is accused of embezzling $36,000 from the organization, which funds field trips and activities for local students. She allegedly gained access to the organization’s funds in the spring and swiftly drained the account, leading to her disappearance. After withdrawing the money, she reportedly shut off her phones and social media accounts, effectively cutting off all communication.
Police have been pursuing leads since the theft was discovered, with evidence suggesting that the suspect had been planning to steal the money all along. "She took it out through July 1st. That was her sole intent when she got access to the bank account—she cleared it out," a law enforcement source told AZ Family.
How has the community reacted?
Parents in the Scottsdale Unified School District expressed relief upon hearing of the arrest. One parent remarked, "The question now is where is this money and will it be returned?"
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to recover the stolen funds and determine whether media attention influenced the suspect's decision to turn herself in. The Scottsdale community remains on edge as they await further updates on the case and the potential return of the stolen money.
