Dover, Delaware: In his first major interview since leaving the White House, Joe Biden has sharply criticized Donald Trump’s foreign policy, accusing him of “modern-day appeasement” toward Russia.

Speaking to the BBC in Delaware during commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Biden warned that Trump’s stance on Russia and Ukraine risks shaking Europe’s faith in America’s leadership.

Biden argued that Vladimir Putin believes Russia has “historical rights to Ukraine” and said Trump’s suggestion that Kyiv should concede territory to stop the conflict was dangerously naive. “Anybody who thought Putin would stop if Kyiv conceded territory is just foolish,” Biden stated.

He compared Trump’s approach to the failed appeasement policies of the 1930s, in reference to the attempts of British prime minister Neville Chamberlain’s to appease Adolf Hitler in the 1930s.

He also warned that if US-European relations collapse under Trump, it “would change the modern history of the world.” Biden expressed concern that US allies are beginning to question whether they can still rely on American support.

Reflecting on Trump’s past statements about seizing Greenland, reclaiming the Panama Canal, or making Canada the 51st state, Biden said: “What the hell’s going on here? What president ever talks like that? That’s not who we are. We’re about freedom, democracy, opportunity, not confiscation.”

Addressing criticism of his own Ukraine policy, Biden defended his administration’s support, saying they provided Kyiv with “everything they needed” to maintain independence and would have escalated US involvement if Putin expanded the war.

On his recent decision to leave the presidential race and endorse Kamala Harris, Biden acknowledged the difficulty, saying, “Things moved so quickly that it made it difficult to walk away.” Biden maintains that endorsing Harris was the right move.
