Jake Kelly's mother shattered after suspect in son's death may spend no time in prison
Phoenix, Arizona: The mother of Jake Kelly, a man brutally beaten to death in August 2023, is voicing her frustration after one of the individuals involved in the incident accepted a plea deal, resulting in no jail time. The decision has sparked outrage and calls for accountability from Kelly’s family.
On Friday, one of Jake Kelly's former roommates, Shannon Young, agreed to a plea deal that could result in probation rather than prison. Young had faced up to nine years in prison for her role in the attack, but will now serve a lighter sentence after pleading guilty to hindering prosecution. Prosecutors have not recommended any jail time, a decision that has left Jake’s mother, along with many others, disheartened.
"It’s pitiful," Jan Kelly told Arizona's family, expressing her disappointment outside the courthouse in downtown Phoenix. "Nothing they do will feel right because nothing will bring Jake back."
In November 2023, three people were arrested tied to Kelly's fatal beating: Angel Mullooly, Cory Young, and Shannon Young (the Youngs were Kelly's roommates).
Mullooly was eventually was indicted by a grand jury for second-degree murder, while the Youngs were indicted for hindering an investigation. Court documents revealed shocking details, like photos of those injuries allegedly being shared the night of the assault by both Shannon Young and Mullooly.
The Youngs allegedly carried Jake from the driveway of their Phoenix home inside to a bathtub before leaving him on a couch without medical care for nearly 18 hours.
While Young received a plea deal, other individuals involved in the case face more serious charges. Angel Mullooley, a friend of the Young's, has been charged with second-degree murder, and Cory Young, another convicted felon connected to the case, remains in custody on charges of hindering the prosecution. Kelly’s mother hopes that the remaining suspects will face harsher punishments, particularly Cory Young, whom she believes poses a danger to society.
"I want to see justice for Jake," Kelly’s mother emphasized. "Cory should get the maximum sentence. He’s dangerous and needs to be off the streets."
