Baltimore: US Rep Kweisi Mfume (D-Md.) sparked controversy Thursday by declaring that former President Donald Trump and White House adviser Elon Musk "deserve to be arrested and charged with assault on the Constitution".

During a press conference with Maryland’s Democratic congressional delegation, Mfume acknowledged his remarks might sound “crazy and ludicrous” but doubled down, accusing the Trump administration of orchestrating an attack on democratic norms through sweeping federal cuts.

“It’s a damn shame what’s happening to our nation under the guise of this Trump administration and his department of government evil,” Mfume said, referencing the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency.

Maryland’s Democratic lawmakers condemned the administration’s policies, warning of devastating effects on Medicaid, food assistance programs, and federal employment.

While none of Maryland’s delegation explicitly called for impeachment, their outrage mirrored growing Democratic resistance. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) highlighted legal challenges against Trump’s policies, including a successful injunction against mass layoffs at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Meanwhile, Rep. April McClain Delaney (D-Md.) emphasized efforts to protect social safety nets, though Democrats face an uphill battle in the GOP-controlled Congress.

Republicans, led by Maryland’s lone GOP representative, Andy Harris, are pushing for $1.5 trillion in spending cuts, including reductions to Medicaid and SNAP. Harris, absent from the press conference, is negotiating a contentious spending bill that could further strain Maryland’s economy.

“We have to resist, resist, resist,” Mfume declared, signaling a protracted political battle ahead. Trump, meanwhile, dismissed critics on Truth Social, claiming Democrats have “lost everything, especially their minds".
